Desire should not be ambivalent but when the object is obscure,
the goad’s prodding is often unpersuasive. Acting as if a thing is
so, as if to prime the pump, so to speak, is said by some to be the
way to break the bonds of aboulia. But too often the feigned action
comes to nothing more than a futile flail that only draws the cords
of indecision tighter still.
One is left panting in the dark.
