“The dead man walked in his dead town.”
Descent Into Hell
Charles Williams

Overborn, underdead
Lost love’s last lament
Going, going, gone
Still yet never went.

Ill forgot, ill recalled
Heart, top to bottom rent
The missive writ but unforward
A dimly-wit wisdom half-sent.

Some soul-cost, unreceived
The spirit’s spurt spent
Down lies the dog deceived
The meaning lost not meant.

The hollow eye stares blankward
The blank glares back in full.
